I was a student of Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in academic year 2014/15. I obtained Certificate of Higher Education in Nautical Sciences (HNC) prior to proceeding to onboard training as per Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB-UK) guidelines. I sailed as a Deck Cadet on a bulk Carrier named MV GRAND BRIDGE, IMO Number 9131046 of 26341 GRT of 189 meters managed by OVERSEAS BULKER ENTERPRISE Co. SAL. My onboard training period from January 2016 to January 2017 included all the tasks as per MNTB guidelines but not limited to i.e. keeping the safe navigation watch, using all the navigation equipment, steering the vessel, inspecting lifesaving appliances, actively participating in Ship’s security, deck maintenance, anchoring, mooring, rigging access and pilot ladder, lowering and recovering of lifeboat among others. After completion of onboard training I rejoined LJMU to study for Diploma of Higher Education in Nautical Sciences (HND), a qualification necessary for Chief Mate Certificate. I obtained the HND and also passed the SQA written & Oral examinations conducted by MCA-UK to obtain Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency (COC).
