I was born on the small island of Buyukada in the sea of Marmara, I have spent all my life surrounded by the sea, with the only way off the island by ferry, I have grown up respecting the sea, it’s power and importance to our lives. I have developed myself to be self-motivated, to take responsibility for my actions, and to add to my skills and experience to build for my future life. Throughout my seagoing career I have always used my shore time to attend, at my personal expense, courses to expand my knowledge and ability to progress upwards to the position of Chief Officer. During my current spell onshore I have added to my knowledge with the aim of increasing my career opportunities by taking formal courses in both the French and Spanish languages, in addition to regular practice of my English with my English native speaker neighbour. My motivation for increasing my range of language skills is based on the requirement to be able to effectively deal with overseas harbour and customs officials with the aim to avoid any unnecessary delays and or misunderstanding resulting in delays and the potential for increased voyage costs.
