Cover letter
In order to looking for a better future for my family and me, with this letter I’m applying for a new employment as ships engineer in your company. I’m a marine engineer all my life. During my education, the thesis I wrote, was about reliquefaction plants on LNG tankers and about shore to ship electricity supply and connection systems and now I hold master of engineering degree.
In my present employment it is not obligatory to have STCW95 convention certificates. So in the last year I renewed all of these certificates and now I’m qualified again as an Officer in charge of an engineering watch on ship powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW or more. Now I need just 6 months of work on the ship as an engineer and then I will have an opportunity to apply for 2nd engineer on ship powered by main propulsion machinery of 3000 kW or more course, which is my intention. At the beginning of the year I obtain basic crude oil, products and basic LNG certificates, since I’m always interested in the transportation of them by sea or related duties.
I have 17 years of experience in the navy as engineer and officer on Defense Ministry fleet. The last 6 years I’m working as a chief engineer of a multipurpose ship Triglav 11. Before I was chief engineer on smaller craft. The ship Triglav 11, I’m still embarked on, is 50 m long, with 400 tons displacement and main propulsion plant of 3 x 2880 kW, MTU 4000 series engines. I hold MTU licenses for 396 series too, for managing and maintaining engines and electronics till level W3 (engine parts overhauling), which was issued in Germany and Italy. Electronics course consists also of ship wiring and sensors. Although I hold also other civil and military licenses, related to security and safety (ISM/ISPS). I also have small arms knowledge and experience.
During this period in the navy I manage engineering department, which consist of 9 subordinates and all together exploit and maintain all the ship’s systems in good working conditions, except gunnery.
My job also consists of other military duties, but especially, I’m responsible for planning daily and longer period maintenance and overhauling of ship’s engines and other systems. We do dry docking every 2 years, so I gathered a lot of experience in organizing, executing, planning, coordinating and supervising dry docking of our fleet. Experience in works on the hull, superstructure, main engines, gensets, air conditioning, pneumatic, hydraulic, propulsion and electrics. I’m also experienced in welding, pipe works and materials used in marine industry. Maybe I don’t have experience in finances, but I do have experience in costs planning and logistics.
Because we don’t have a national ships survey and registry agencies, I cooperate with surveyors of Germanischer Lloyd, now DNV/GL in the Port of Koper.
As an officer, I’m also a key member in organizing and executing national and international military activities with the ship. On the present employment we travel approximately 3-5 months a year, involved in national activities, international activities and NATO or EU missions. So, traveling for me is not a problem, I like to.
Before I joined the navy, in the year of 2000, I worked on a 30 meters sailing yacht Alisee as a motorman/sailor. The yacht was owned by private Italian owner, and I spent main part of the year in the northern and central Adriatic serving owner family and guests on board. At that time I was responsible for preparing the yacht for the season, exploitation and maintenance during the season and for preparing her for winter season.
During the time of my early faculty education, I was also embarked on merchant marine fleet, as 3rd and 4th engineer on bulk carriers of 12000 DWT to 20000 DWT owned by Splošna plovba Portoroz, Slovenia. Before that I worked as a student in hotels as a receptionist.
I have also experience in scheduled maintenance and repairing engines and gensets, marine and shore of various type: Volvo penta, Yanmar, Caterpillar, MAN and MTU series 2000 also. I also maintained and repaired air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration and fresh water production systems.
For purpose of new employment, I have done Marlin’s English language test in the beginning of the year, with score of 88 to 90%. I’m also able to speak Italian and Croatian language fluent.
In my private life I’m married with 3 children. I like sports as skiing, tour skiing, open water diving and horse riding. I have a small farm with my father, but since last year, due to his health reasons, we decided to end it.
I decide, that now is time, not to change the page in the book, but to change the book of my life, so I’m applying for this or related employment. The navy commander agree with me to end the present employment in few months and after I will be available.
